The Boat

A photograph of the front area of Vulcan. the seating is in an 'l' shape, and has blue cushions. the places where the table fits are visible on the floor. the other seating area and kitchen are in the background.

Vulcan is a six berth, 60 foot, narrowboat, built in 2000 by GT Narrowboats, and fitted out by Nimbus Narrowboats. Outside, she is painted blue, with cream and red accents. The interior is fitted out in crown cut oak and African walnut, with American Oak laminate on the floor (with carpet runners available for use). The top half of the walls are cream coloured.

Sleeping a maximum of six people, Vulcan has one fixed double bed, and two double dinettes. The aft cabin contains the master bed, which extends to the full 5’ wide. The dining area and forward saloon each convert into a double bed.

The mid-ships bathroom has a basin, pump out toilet (with fresh water flush) and a good sized shower with glass door.

A Webasto diesel boiler provides hot water, and heats the radiators. A solid fuel Morse stove is fitted for when extra heating is desired. Both 12v and 240v electricity sockets are available. The 240v is managed by a Viktron Inverter, and we are installing an intelligent battery monitor to help keeping the bank or batteries in good condition.

The hull is steel, 10mm thick on the base, 6mm thick on the sides, and 4mm thick on the top. The metalwork is well maintained, and is booked in to have a 2 pack epoxy blacking carried out, with bitumen on top.

A view from the boat window, showing a green field. the frame dividing sections of the windows is visible as a dark 't' shape.

The side windows are divided, with top hoppers and sliding lower portion. The top section allows airflow, but still protects against twigs while moving. The sliding windows allow for a larger opening: ideal for photographers who want to hold their camera out of the window!

In the saloon we have ample seating for eight people (six crew and two guests), at two tables. There is a large flat screen TV, with DVD player built in. On-board Wi-Fi is included, which usually gets a reasonable signal, especially with the external aerial.

The kitchen has a 4 burner hob, gas grill, and oven, as well as a separate microwave. There is a full-sized electric fridge with small freezer compartment. Cooking utensils, pots and pans, cutlery, crockery, cups and glasses, and various other kitchen items are provided; some owners dish up full Sunday roasts and even bake cakes. A vacuum cleaner, mop, and broom are also provided for cleaning.

We have a good sized forward deck, which is big enough to seat 4 for al fresco dining with the smaller of the 2 tables stored in the forward cabin. The forward deck is protected by a cratch cover with windows, which can either have the sides rolled up, or in summer be removed. Aft there is a sheltered seat for 2 (a storage locker with a waterproof cushion top!) to keep the skipper company.
