Owning A Share

Vulcan is owned by a Syndicate of share owners. There are twelve shares available, and each family can own up to three shares. Each share is four weeks; one in each season. Weeks are drawn randomly at the AGM, after which share-owners can swap weeks. Covid permitting, the AGM is held in March, somewhere near where the boat is moored. This is a nice get together for all owners, as well as an opportunity to vote in the committee, and discuss issues relating to the running of Vulcan.

The syndicate is managed by a committee, who volunteer to share the work of maintaining the boat and association. Owners who are not on the committee are also welcome to help as their skills and abilities allow. Where professional services are required, the committee will arrange the work. Each year, some weeks are reserved for maintenance, so regular surveys, blacking, and other planned works do not typically interfere with owners’ time on-board.

We all contribute a monthly sum (currently £65 per share) towards running costs, maintenance, licences, etc. A fund is gradually built up to cover larger eventualities, such as engine replacement or repaints.

Joining our Happy Band……….

When a share is available for sale (please email secretary@vulcanowners.co.uk to enquire about availability), they are offered to existing members for purchase first, then opened to others. Anyone wishing to join us has to undertake an RYA canal boat handling course, unless personally known to an existing member and having years of canal boating experience.

If you are new to canal boating, we strongly suggest that you consider hiring a canal boat, for at least a weeks holiday. Be sure you enjoy the environment, and life on a boat, before buying a share.

We all love our boat, and take a lot of care looking after her. It is hoped that members of the syndicate find ways to join in and work towards her upkeep, with whatever skills they may have.

When on board it is usual to undertake minor repairs if one is able to, and the boat is left clean and tidy after every voyage. A cleaning service is available at our current home marina, Contact our home marina here

Dogs and children are welcome on board. We have a vacuum cleaner that removes fur; for use when we are on shore power.
